WHY MERINO WOOL FOR BABY CLOTHING?

The Merino has some of the finest and softest wool of any sheep due to their finer fibers. It’s 100% natural and considered as nature’s own technical material.

Woolens are essential for babies, especially during the cooler months of the year – but not only! Did you know that the main benefit of merino wool is its incomparable ability to maintain a comfortable micro-climate for your baby’s body?

The merino wool is excellent at regulating body temperature; it provides warmth without overheating the wearer. It breathes and control moisture; therefore it’s perfect for all seasons and environments. Merino keeps your baby warm in the cold and cool in the heat.

Babies are not as adaptable as adults to temperature change. They can lose heat rapidly, as much as four times quicker than adults. Babies under 12 months have difficulty regulating their own temperature, even in a warm climate. When temperature is regulated and maintained your baby will become more relaxed, gain weight and sleep longer. I think there’s no need to tell you how important this if you have a premature or low weight baby!

The merino wool fibers finely crimped structure traps big quantities of air and provides great heat insulation. Air contained between the fibers reduces the heat conduction within the material, and therefore has an insulating effect against both heat and cold.

Like cotton, wool absorbs water, but, unlike cotton, wool remains warm when wet. This is particularly interesting when it comes to babies and their incapacity to regulate temperature correctly. Since the wool absorbs moisture vapor from the body both between fibers and inside them, it still feels dry against the skin even when humid.

The SMÅ range of hand knitted merino wool garments and blankets is silky soft, light weight, easy to care for since machine washable, and kind to delicate skin. We use only nature’s finest materials.

Merino wool, unlike other wools, has a silky outer layer on each fiber, creating an extremely soft, fine texture. This makes the merino fabric comfortable to wear without itch, and actually safe to use for babies with eczema, sensitive skin and allergies. This wool has antibacterial properties.

Another good thing about wool is that it’s sort of self-cleaning. The creatine in the wool naturally brakes down bad smelling bacteria from the skin. Our merino products do not need frequent washing. They can be aired outside in humid weather with good result.

All merino wool used by SMÅ comes from European producers. The main part are produced by a French company, FONTY, which is working for a durable short circuit wool production in France. Wool is collected from local farmers and treated in France in an environmentally friendly tradition.

I hope you’ll enjoy our excellent merino wool products!
