Travelling with children, part 1 July 29 2018

SUMMER HOLIDAY
.
Travelling with children can feel like a great challenge, but most things can be anticipated.
Here is a small guide to travelling by airplane with SMÅ.
.
.
Children under two years usually travel without their own seats on so there is most likely neither carry-on luggage, nor food included for your little one. This first means you will need to have your child in your lap and it also that you will have to pack some snacks with you. Preferably some fruits, like banana that easily can be mashed for the smallest ones. For the slightly bigger children, raisins, biscuits or fruit bars are a great option.
.
Children and especially small ones or those traveling for the first time can feel rather uncomfortable while the plane takes off and is about to land. We adults feel the air pressure in our ears as well but for a little child flying for the first time it can be quite a distress. If you have a small baby you might nurse while starting and landing, it´s also a good option to make sure the children are drinking or why not chewing some gum, and don’t  wait until it hurts, prevent the pain before your child gets a bad experience with flying.

We all know how active kids can be and even though we love that it can cause some problems during a flight. Make sure to bring something with you to keep your child occupied for at least a while. The smallest one will probably fall asleep since the noise and motion of an airplane reminds the child of the time in the womb. The older children can be a little challenging but stay calm! Prepare some audiobooks or their favorite songs for them to listen to. Why not buy some magazines or a new coloring book and new crayons before you leave to make the plane ride special.
.
If you’re on a long haul flight the question: ”are we there yet” can make you go crazy, its´ not easy for young children to understand how much an hour is. A good idea is to compare the time to trips they are used to; perhaps the flight is like back and forth to grandma and grandpas. And of course make sure to bring your child's favorite cuddly toy and some of the other favorites from home, but not too many: imagine the tears if they lose one of the favorites!
.
Eating and drinking by yourself is not the easiest in the beginning and it’s even trickier on an air plane where space is not current. There for it can be a good idea to pack changes of tops, leggings and a body. Several terry cloth bibs will here be a good idea, and takes nearly no place in your changing bag. Since temperature in the cabin is usually quite cold you’ll need an extra cardigan and a little blanket
..
.
Changing diapers on an air plane is usually a bit difficult. You will probably have to handle it at your seat since lavatory’s are often too small. Here we can recommend our small changing mat in soft fabric so it can easily be put anywhere. It will protect the seat and can easily be folded together and stocked away. It might also be a good idea to bring a top for yourself to change if an accident occurs.
.
And hey, most mportant: kids feels what you feel so try to stay as calm as possible
and everyone will enjoy (or at least not hate...) the flight!
